CV:
Fujio Miyawaki received the M.D. degree from the University of Tokyo in 1979, and the Ph.D. degree in cardiovascular surgery from the University of Tokyo in 1896 by writing a doctoral thesis while he was doing clinical work.
After 1.5-year postgraduation internship program, he spent 2 years working as a general surgeon, according to the then training program made by the Department of Thoracic Surgery, University of Tokyo. Thereafter, he accumulated clinical experience as cardiovascular surgeon at the University of Tokyo and Tokyo Women’s Medical College from 1982 to 1993. In the meanwhile, he was awarded the British Council Fellowship and studied from 1986 to 1988 at the Institute of Medical & Dental Bioengineering in University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK. From 1993 to 1999, he was a Division Head in Department of Surgical Research, the National Cardiovascular Center Research Institute, Osaka, Japan. He has been a Professor at Tokyo Denki University since 1999. He invented a new-type ventricular assist device termed “Recovery-directed ventricular Assist device” and “Vibratory microinjection system” which facilitates gene transfer into cells in production of transgenic animals. He also proposed an idea of “Scrub Nurse Robot” and has headed its development. His current research interests are in medical robotics, embryological engineering, artificial heart, and others.
